I frequently do the flight from Medellin to Panama on Copa. On my last trip I noticed they charged me the colombia resident exit tax of 31usd. Called to complain but got no resolution.

Just made another reservation for March on Copa from Medellin to Panama. Prior to paying I noticed the colombia resident exit tax was being collected. Called Copa prior to ticketing and was told several times by the rep that everyone pays that tax...that it is colombia that charges it. Explained to the rep that the tax does not apply to non-colombian citizens unless they are residents. Rep insisted that the system collects that for everyone. Asked to speak to a supervisor and was given the same story ..the impression I got was basically take it or leave it. Supervisor did say would escalate the case. Will take the advice of fellow travelers on this site and ask for the refund at check-in.

Not sure about other carriers from the USA but American Airlines automatically removes the colombia exit tax when making your reservation after you indicate you are a US Citizen and reside in the USA. Really have to wonder if some of the airlines are just pocketing this extra booty they are charging non colombian citizens or actually giving the money to colombia. If this was done in the USA the class action lawyers would be all over them!
