Not sure about BA but on another UK carrier I know of someone who received a lifetime ban and this was communicated by email a few days after the flight. There was no right to submit evidence or mitigation and the decision was final.
If, after some time has passed, the person in question makes a GDPR request under the 'right to be forgotten' I don't see how the airline can refuse unless there's an ongoing risk from carrying them.
