I don't believe that this is the underlying reason. While we've never done an AUP (thanks for the info about this and the pointer to the wiki), we have upgraded BA flights a number of times and had it show as U. We've always had them credit, at least to original cabin and sometimes to an upgraded cabin despite the U. When we have upgraded from Business to First, it shows as Z, but we've gotten credited as if A.
So, even with the upgrade, I think that AA know that this is not really an award ticket. At least they always have in our cases.
