Call AA and change to MIA-DFW-LHR and you can confirm the upgrade on DFW-LHR right now.

As has been the case for a few years now AA doesn't force you to select SWU's.

If you're the kind if traveler that books weeks/months in advance on more popular routes on popular days (like MIA-LHR on a Thursday) with little flexibility then yea, I would pick something else.
