But they need to entertain the idea of hesitating if they wish to get a good price from Airbus. After all, airplane price is not a negligible factor.
It is not impossible Boeing has to compensate to CX for the delayed 777-9. It may be in the form of 787-10 or additional 777-9 at a heavily discounted price. I don't think CX needs 787-9 at the moment, but 787-10 could be a replacement for 777-300 (non-ERs). It's certainly a downsize, but there aren't many options out there (i.e. A350-1000 with reduced MTOW). Who knows? Not many were expecting a large order of A330-900 before confirmation anyways.
