If "upgrading" from Basic by selecting exit row, you probably will get earlier boarding (since exit row is usually asked to board earlier) -- but I understand that does not give you carry-on privileges. (I believe your BP would still say Group 9, but you'd be invited to board when they call for 'guests seated in the exit row'. The Group 9 flag means no carry-on.)
No not from Basic, just using Silver level seat selection in Econo. This would be for overnight return from HNL on
Boeing 787-9, where comfort is priority.
