By my count, that leaves only about 18,299,999 people in the largest metropolitan area of the United States. I don’t think Kirby cares you’re no longer there, relative to this discussion.
There’s also 19.5 million in the Tri-State area. Even if you if you cut 3/4ths from each to account for strong airport preference, you’re still left with sizable opportunities for UA at JFK. Plus, the benefit of diverting some pax from EWR to free up capacity for better uses than O/D.
DL is #1 at LAX and #1 east of the Hudson in the tri-state area. It doesn’t strike me as a fight UA would want to pick and think they would win.
