I'm just wrapping up a four-night stay here - I couldn't find a thread on this property so I figured I would start one.
In summary: I think this checks almost all the boxes for a basic ski hotel, especially for Ikon pass holders, and offers a great value proposition at a Category 2. I will definitely come back.
Room: I booked and received a standard King room on points. I noted three classes of suites were available through midday on my arrival date, then they all disappeared - not sure if someone else got them or the hotel just didn't feel like upgrading people. No big deal and I know suite upgrades are not part of the standard package at HP. When we walked into the room my son said "this looks like every other Hyatt Place everywhere" and he was correct. I had no issues at all with the room.
Breakfast: I don't do many HP stays but I thought the food was well-prepared here. For example, the hash browns were really crisp. The guacamole was probably from Costco but was acceptable and a nice touch. There were several fruit options. Nothing special but it was good to load up before a day of skiing and I felt like a half-step above typical HP food.
Staff: All very friendly. I typically wake up early to get some work done before the day starts so I was often in the lobby starting around 430AM. After a couple of days of this, the front desk agent came and got me and told me she would take me to a quiet area in the lower level where I could work without being disturbed by the breakfast setup. A small example but I thought that was really nice. Everyone I interacted with was kind.
Other amenities:
- A moderate sized outdoor hot tub, nice and hot and probably seats 8 people (the website says there is an outdoor pool year-round, but it's currently covered)
- A hot cocoa bar available in the afternoons which was a nice treat after skiing - with a few topping options
- Guest laundry on the 4th floor - $1 per load (quarters only) and it worked well
- A small fitness center, I didn't use it but it looked pretty typical for an HP
As to the skiing: When I go skiing I do not need anything fancy - I like to ski all day, eat dinner, go to bed and repeat the next day. Of course this hotel is not ski-in/ski-out but it's convenient to 4 Ikon properties and a super value at Category 2.
- I did not rent a car, just Uber'd from SLC
- The 972 ski bus goes to Solitude and Brighton
- The CS1/2 (which I believe is a new route this year) goes to Alta and Snowbird
- Both busses are free with your Ikon pass
- Typically in the morning my son and I would walk down S 3000 E, past the Residence Inn, to the ski bus stop just south of the traffic signal there. It's about a 5 minute walk and enabled us to board before everyone waiting at the Park and Ride so we could secure a seat (note: the CS2 does not stop here so make sure you check the schedule or use the Transit app).
- In the afternoon we would get off at the 6200 S Park and Ride; when we were 2 minutes away we'd call the front desk and they would send over the shuttle for the 2 minute drive back to the hotel
There is a closet in the lobby where the front desk will store your skis if you want (we did this to avoid getting the room wet). Given the volume of ski traffic here, I think it would have made sense to have a ski locker area and that's the only thing that I think is missing - but the closet works OK.
I personally can't justify spending $$$ at someplace like the GH Deer Valley when I'm going to be out of the room skiing all day anyway. For a value ski stay, this works great and I appreciated that I didn't even need to bother with a rental car or parking.
Nearby- Restaurants: I thought Bandits Grill was pretty decent, the pulled pork sandwich was good and draft beers are $3 on Thursdays. We also liked Spitz which is fast-casual mediterranean, although the food ended up being a bit spicy for my son so if you have young kids you may want to ask for something not spicy. We tried Dasks Greek Grill but I didn't really like it.
- Urgent Care: My son ended up feeling unwell after our first day here and I took him to Foothill Family Clinic which is basically across the street. Despite the mixed reviews online, they were absolutely great and we were in and out of there in 25-30 minutes after a really thorough exam. It ended up just being altitude-related (although my son has spent lots of time in the Rockies and never had an issue before) and went away on its own - still, they were super nice and if you need a doctor, I recommend them.
I'd be glad to answer any questions people may have, especially about ski logistics.
