As for NRT, it is incredibly easy if connecting on NH or UA from the US, as you just walk straight out into T1, no transit security. Even if you're not coming from a "clean" country (referring only to whether NRT requires transit security), the transit is very civilized.
I've done SFO-TPE-SGN on JX; There was a sign (and a person) directing transit passengers into the gate holding area right off the jetbridge (as opposed to continuing towards transit security. I don't know how long they've had that setup in place for inbound US passengers, but I've noticed that in place on BR and CI over last couple of times I've flown.
