- Name of the hotel: Grand Mercure Shenzhen Nanshan, China
- What is your ALL status? Platinum with Accor Plus
- Were you (or for multi-stayers were you generally) happy with the hotel/stay? It's ok, things are more or less as expected
- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
2 rooms booked - Superior room (with ALL Plus free night voucher) and Deluxe room (with ALL Plus 50% off). Both are received as expected without upgrade and were available at check in (at 12 noon)
- How are the rooms?
Both rooms are cleaned with the amenities expected provided in full. Lots of buttons in the room to control lights and window blinds. Cleaning crew opened window in both rooms (with mosquito net preventing mosquito entry) which we closed them after inspecting the room. Wash basin in superior room is located opposite the bathroom, whilst it forms part of the bathroom in Deluxe room. There's reading lamp available but with close inspection the fabric showed clear wear and tear - note that this hotel opened for around 4 years.
We booked a two bed room for Deluxe room, but for some reason the size of the 2 beds are different - one is notably smaller, only fitting one person. The bed was comfortable, with memory foam pillow and allergen free pillow (I think - sort of plastic-y) provided by default.
- What was good and what was bad?
Good: The breakfast has a reasonable range of food - primarily Guangdong-style Chinese food with a handful of Western options. A small salad bar is also available. Front desk and restaurant are generally responsive. Air conditioning are fully adjustable. As platinum member, the room was made available when we arrived at 12 noon (though we had to wait for 15-20 mins for the room), and the check out time was set at 2pm by default.
Bad: Location-wise it takes around 10 minute walk from metro station to the hotel - perfectly fine for able-bodied but when one brings wheelchair-bound grandparent that was bit of an issue (having said that it was easy to order Didi/Uber-equivalent from the hotel). It's nowhere close to any major shopping center (in the middle of residential area) so you have to travel for basically anything, especially during Chinese New Year period when most of small business nearby are closed. The hotel restaurant (except breakfast and lobby cafe) are run by third-party.
Some may also find the robot-led service delivery to be too robotic, although they move very efficiently. The TV is available in Chinese only which could also present issues for foreign visitors and their service provision request the use of Wechat app, although there's still a classic phone for a call to the front desk.
You may also have to call them to chase the standard member benefits.
- Did you get club lounge access? How was the lounge? No lounge available
- What about welcome drinks, welcome amenities or any other special perks?
Free minibar consisting of 2 extra bottle of mineral water, a can of coke and sprite. No alcohol available. No welcome drinks either. Fruit plate was offered after chasing with them but the quality was so-so.
- Value for $ or Vouchers? Would you return?
We redeemed ALL Plus China free night voucher for this one (I needed the 20 night out of the card anyway so the free night is of a lower priority). For some reason the options in Shenzhen are generally poor - not just the voucher options but the hotel options in general - it was fortunate that the room was available during the Chinese New Year period where the demand should have been the highest. If I was travelling solo I would have opt for somewhere else, e.g. Guangzhou, where Sofitel or Pullman-grade hotels are available.
I noticed that this hotel no longer accept voucher booking, coupled with it's location in the middle of residential area it's unlikely for me to return to this one.
