Once at the end of said line, she checked our onward BPs and passports and then we walked through the empty lower level gate area, walked up the stairs and were dumped up into a upstairs level gate area. I was expecting a security check of some sorts but I was genuinely shocked when we got to the top of the stairs and found ourselves already on the departures level.
Contrast that with an I=>I connection at NRT T2 which involved the more traditional security check with X-ray machines and all that.
Certain airports, including TPE and for a while NRT, will let passengers connect I-I without going through a security screening when arriving from certain countries, including the US.
When returning to the US, though, the same will not necessarily apply; even then, a security check is still less hassle than clearing CBP, retrieving luggage, and re-checking.
