I disagree with this - baggage handlers will not know if it's within a single ticket or separate, as long as the bag is correctly tag, it should go into the usual system for overnight bags. Furthermore, IF BR agrees to check through the bag, it would also be added to the system/bag file manually (this is why normally you will be asked if your connecting flight is in Y or J).
Of course - there is a risk no matter what the original ticket was/is that it gets delayed.
