tbh i have a suspicion that you had some cancellations on your flight within the 24 hours before, or some no shows. having 6 meals for 3 passengers is actually more than i would have expected normally. with three passengers, catering two full english and some of each of the two other options doesn't sound unreasonable to me - but we have a different opinion on that.
as others have noted, the ifl might have decided to ask you first in order to avoid you not having your first choice. however, speaking as a ggl i would not expect them to do that, and wouldn't have felt aggrieved if i didn't get my first choice in that scenario. again, i appreciate your opinion is different to mine here.
opening the return to pinch one from there - assuming the return was also a breakfast service - is understandably not done. after all, you may have another ggl on that return flight who now can't have a full english as their first choice and starts a thread on FT to complain

You may be right about the cancellations I don't know. To clarify, I wasn't suggesting that BA would over cater to feed the crew, I was just saying that the crew do eat the unsold meals and so there isn't quite the potential waste that would appear on a simple view. I also want to take the heat out of this. I wasn't aggrieved; I was disappointed. The chat with the IFL was a really friendly chat. However, a 2am start, an hour in fast track security waiting for too many bags to go through secondary (because the Gold Wing security was closed when I got there), no chance to get to the lounge (where I would normally have eaten something) and a bus gate for a 6.15am flight to Belfast with a 2 hour drive afterwards. Not the best start of the day.
I'm off to LA in the morning and I am taking a packed lunch just in case!
