He also said they had catered for the return flight but he could not open that trolley and use one of those breakfasts because that would leave someone without a first choice on the return; go figure! I know somebody suggested that was a waste of catering to load 3 English breakfasts but when the crew usually eat the unsold meals then I don't think that point flies. I also agree that your first choice may not be always available because of the way catering is ordered. I can well understand that when there are 6 rows of Club seats occupied that it becomes a bit more of a lottery but with just 3 of us, it was daft. And finally, whatever anyone might think about the right and wrong of this, I do think BA acknowledged that they had cocked up because they had not loaded 3 breakfasts when they had loaded three each of the other choices.
i don't think ba over cater on the basis the crew eat the remainder. if crew are entitled to meals, i believe they have them loaded. they are not merely forced to pick over the remainders of the passenger meals which are not taken.
tbh i have a suspicion that you had some cancellations on your flight within the 24 hours before, or some no shows. having 6 meals for 3 passengers is actually more than i would have expected normally. with three passengers, catering two full english and some of each of the two other options doesn't sound unreasonable to me - but we have a different opinion on that.
as others have noted, the ifl might have decided to ask you first in order to avoid you not having your first choice. however, speaking as a ggl i would not expect them to do that, and wouldn't have felt aggrieved if i didn't get my first choice in that scenario. again, i appreciate your opinion is different to mine here.
opening the return to pinch one from there - assuming the return was also a breakfast service - is understandably not done. after all, you may have another ggl on that return flight who now can't have a full english as their first choice and starts a thread on FT to complain
