as mentioned, you need to pay with the card to get that benefit (one of the only UA-specific benefits, I think, where holding the card doesn’t give you the benefit).
with no redeposit fees, if the price of the award is the same now, you can always cancel, then rebook using the explorer card to get the benefit. Might even be worth it if it has gone up a bit (that’ll be up to you to figure out why it is worth). Not sure about anymore, maybe someone else can report a recent experience, but at least in the past, buying an ancillary on the reservation using the card also activated the benefit. So for example, buying an E+ seat and using the card to pay - YMMV.
