I think you're referring to the Delta Connection / Comair flight that crashed on takeoff from Lexington in '06. (A personal acquaintance was the FA on that flight.) Not exactly disputing your thesis, but not sure this incident is the best example as the plane broke in two when it crashed.
Yeah, I remember it mostly because I was flying OMA-MSP that day and remember talking to co-workers and none of them were flying CRJs, except for me. I couldn't remember if it was a Delta or Northwest flight then. The point being, that the majority died from blunt force and not the ensuing fire.
