In my case the qualifiers for AA reissuing the tickets was that it had been more than 3 days since my call to change flights, the segments on the ticket lookup still showed "OK" instead of "EXCH", and the flights didn't match those on my PNR. Then they relented and said something was up, and reissued the ticket.
In your case, it looks like you eventually found the ticket number that was current, so that's good.
