I actually would've preferred doing my one return layover in SFO over TPE, just as far as that was concerned. That way, I could've used the layover to get my US entry/customs over with, instead of having to deal with it after landing at the end of the trip.
Yeah, personally I would prefer to not have to clear customs while in transit; the airport you're transiting through, what time your flight arrives, whether or not you qualify for any sort of expedited immigrations processing, whether or not you have checked bags, and how long you have to connect all makes a difference in how stressful it can be. That's just enough variables that I'd rather avoid it if I can.
