Unless this was a BA flight that was neither to nor from the UK, then the standard practise is not a refund between the fares, but that UK261 applies and the passengers are entitled to reimbursement of 75% of the fare ( assuming flight distance > 1500km ) - do not accept just a refund between the fares and don't accept that this would be standard practise

If this was the entire one way journey, then 75% of the one way fare is due - if there were any connecting flights then use the percentage of flight distance downgraded

You don't need to lodge a formal complaint, just initiate a claim with MCOL or , if > 8 weeks, go, if preferred, to CEDR
