As we settle into the new year, I am thrilled to again host the Kansas City BBQ DO
!! We had a great turn-out the past two years which truly exceeded my expectations with it only taking fourteen years after I joined FT to host a DO
This is a place-holder announcement, for the time-being, though I wanted to be sure to post something for those who will be coming into town and need to make travel arrangements.
As in the past, the DO will begin the afternoon of
Friday, May 2nd with beverages around 4:30pm at
Taps on Main (1715 Main St.), followed by dinner around 6:30pm and the possibility for beverages at the hotel if somebody gets a huge suite again (or we can venture out to one of the many excellent local establishments.
For those arriving early on Friday, I will be in town fairly early in the mid-morning and am happy to help organize a lunch, brewery/distillery crawl, etc. For
Friday dinner, we'll be at
Jack Stack, located just north of Union Station in the Freight House area. Jack Stack has a nice outdoor patio, a large menu and plenty of space for a large group. IIRC, the 2015 BBQ DO was the last time the group ventured here and I consider it to be one of the better establishments in the city. As of now, I have a reservation for twenty which can be changed should the need arise.
23 MAR UPDATE - Now that we're at 35 attendees for dinner, we've reached the upper limit before the restaurant forces us to do group dining which requires minimum spend, etc. There is the possibility we can add another table, though this would be a separate reservation. As such, I'm going to add a Friday dinner wait list and also try to book a second table of six to account for anybody who might also want to attend.
On
Saturday, we'll start the day with a BBQ stop at
Wolfepack BBQ at 11:00am(so you might as well skip the free breakfast from the hotels, despite the temptation...!). Following Wolfepack, there are other great options nearby, but I don't want to overload anybody with BBQ (what a concept
)... but we can certainly venture to a second or third! location if anybody still has room
Saturday afternoon has traditionally been a loosely organized time period for those who might want to grab a nap, visit a museum, etc. You can guarantee there will be a brewery/distillery crawl Saturday afternoon.
Saturday evening, our friend holland has graciously volunteered his property for us to gather around the fire and enjoy beverages and Costco pizza (among other items).
Sunday is pretty unstructured as most folks leave in the morning. For those who are still around, we can grab brunch and/or some beverages in the KC area. More on this once there is an idea of who will be sticking around.
As with the past two years, the
Westin Crown Centre (spelled like that for our friends from the great North
) will be the official DO hotel. As of a day or two ago,
GW McLintock said the award rates had gone down, so I would highly encourage a spec. booking if you think you will be able to make it. The Sheraton Crown Centre is east of the Westin and within a two-three minute walk. The Hotel KC, a Hyatt unbound collection property, is a little over a mile to the north and accessible via the free
KC Street Car which has a stop at Union Station (across from the Westin).
I will be sharing more details in the coming days regarding BBQ locations for Saturday, but wanted to get an idea of how many might be interested to allow for the potential of group reservation and am hoping to test out a couple locations this weekend before making a final decision.
