Is there any chance of a cash upgrade option by contacting AirJapan directly, or would they not be willing to do that since it was bought through United? Are there any options through United? I had a Thai Airways flight for the same route last year where I was able to cash upgrade and choose different seats, although still in economy class that time.
I had two NH flights in Jan, purchased on UA, and in both cases I was able to select desired seats in advance, but only via the NH site using the confirmation number provided by UA.

There is no cash upgrade option but it is possible to use NH miles to upgrade an NH flight purchased via UA, as long as the flight number on your ticket is NH, not UA codeshare. In my case, it was UA and UA wasn’t able to switch to NH as the same fare bucketwasnt available on the NH side. So even though I had miles available via Amex transfer, the upgrade option didn’t work out.
