Just found this thread a few days ago and managed to catch up through the 30+ pages of the treasure trove of info here! Thank you KI-NRT and everyone’s collective inputs!
Until I started reading this thread I had no idea Asaba is way up there in the onsen ryokan world. The place was so unassuming and had such a laid back feel when we stayed in 2023.

Anyhow, in case it’s of use to anyone else not speaking Japanese trying to book there (Asaba), I didn’t have any problems making a reservation directly with them over the phone in English. They followed up with e-mail correspondence in English to help me choose a room that would be most appropriate for my family’s needs. I was traveling with an elderly family member. It’s her first trip to Japan and mobility was a concern. The property does have an elevator. The suite we were booked in was comfortable and had a spectacular view of the garden and the hillside. It was private at the same time so you could enjoy the view from your own bath. The common areas were also inviting and the renovated library/living room is a nice blend of modern design and traditional aesthetics. Food and drinks, including non-alcoholic options, were excellent and not repetitive during our two-night stay. There were a few moments when we did have to use Google translate with our Nakai-san, but that still didn’t diminish our experience.

That being said, I’m looking to try Nishimuraya Honkan for a few nights in June. How busy/bustling is Kinosaki Onsen during the weekdays outside of the crab season? What’s the feel/vibe of the place?
