I tried purchasing a Japan domestic ticket (from my home in the US) with both Chase Sapphire Reserve VISA and AMEX Platinum cards and neither were accepted.

I recall this being a problem a few years ago. I looked at my records and see that I purchased through Expedia to get it booked. That ended up being very problematic at check in at ITM. It took so long to sort that we barely made our flight.
