Well, it's #3. So he is screwed? CX is now saying we have to cancel and rebook but they can't guarantee the seats will be there. One agent basically said to try our luck at the check in counter.
I have a similar dilemma with my surname. I have scandinavian letter "Ä" in it. Its translated to "AE" in machine readable part in passport but doing bookings i just use "A" because "Ä" is not supported on most sites. Never had any problems.
Not sure if this relates too much, but somewhat similar anyway.
I personally would just go for the flight.
