One main advantage of paying by PayPal is their pay in three options (interest free). So, if you want to split the payment in to three parts, it is a very good tool to use. I have used that to book BA flights before, and it worked without any problem.
i'm sure the vast majority of PayPal purchases go through fine ... and I take your point about being able to split the payment ...
but to me the possibility of the PayPal transaction being reversed [or funds source being challenged] is not work the risk compared to a standard Credit Card purchase where the risk of the transaction being reversed/challenged is effectively zero once it clears initial processing
