I am curious how the commercial arrangements work. If, say, BA sells a flight through Expedia.com, my understanding is that Expedia earns very little in terms of commission these days. How much is BA going to pay Alaska for the same sale?
I doubt most of it has to do with codeshares. Some of it is simply agreements in place. For example, AS only seems to sell BA on their website when it's direct flights to/from LHR. If there is a connection they'll throw it to a different partner. Look up PDX-LIS and they offer PDX-JFK-CMN-LIS 🙄
So I think it is partnerships, access to inventory, and bad IT causing most of the problems.
