There is a large and longstanding Portuguese / Funchal community around Bath Road. Two options there are Madeirinhas at the back of the Leonardo Hotel, and Toca do Coelho by Moxy, both are inexpensive and very much home-made.

The Maderinhas is awesome. Food so good, beer inexpensive. It's a proper hole in the wall establishment that won't disappoint.
