Yes, the Pheasant is behind The Marriott, and is regarded by airport workers and trade unions as the best place to eat locally, it doesn't get many travellers going there, mainly because it's a bit hidden away. It's a very large pub, it's best to reserve on obviously busy times (staff Christmas lunches for example). No children, they've had licensing issues there. If you don't like your table - it's a pub that has been extended many times and some areas aren't very attractive - don't hesitate to ask for another. No online reservations, you have to call up.

There is a large and longstanding Portuguese / Funchal community around Bath Road. Two options there are Madeirinhas at the back of the Leonardo Hotel, and Toca do Coelho by Moxy, both are inexpensive and very much home-made.
