EVA Air costcutting

I’ve been flying EVA Air regularly, and there are definitely signs of cost-cutting, particularly in the little touches that used to set them apart. For example, back in December 2023, the hard-shell amenity kits were proper high-quality and came with 33ml body lotion, 20ml hand cream, and 10ml lip balm (no facial mist back then). By June 2024, the kit itself was new but had downgraded in terms of built design, no longer a proper hard-shell - had 10ml hand cream, 5ml lip balm, and 7ml facial mist, but they dropped the body lotion—you could still always get it in the bathroom, though so not that noticeable. Most recently, they’ve scaled the facial mist down to just 5ml, which feels like they’re trimming corners more than necessary.

The dustbag for the overnight kits has also changed noticeably, going from actual dustbag material to something that feels more like umbrella fabric. On my LAX-TPE flight on July 2024, I used to get both a coin bag and a leather luggage tag, but on my most recent flight, they replaced the pouch entirely (not as elegant as July imo) and skipped the coin bag. These small downgrades add up over time.

The dining experience has also taken a hit. They’ve cut the amuse-bouche course for long-haul flights, where you’d get a small bite before the appetizer. Now, they just give you some crackers, which feels underwhelming. I also noticed they’ve stopped handing out chocolates and welcome notes upon boarding long-haul flights (last seen July 2024 for me). The menu design has changed as of January 2025, and it feels a bit childish and poppy compared to their old, more refined look - on December 2024 I still received the old menu design. Even the tablecloth feels slightly thinner—nothing drastic, but regular flyers will notice the difference.

On the CGK-TPE route, they used to provide slippers at your seat when you boarded, but now you have to request them. The bathroom amenities on this sector also no longer include facial mist. A shocking experience comparison from June 2024 and Januady 2025. In the BR lounge, they’ve quietly removed the hot dog station, which used to be a small but fun touch.

EVA Air is still an excellent airline, but these subtle changes are noticeable for frequent flyers. It’s disappointing to see the little luxuries they used to pride themselves on being cut back. It makes the overall experience feel less premium than it used to. Not that it matters much, but BR in terms of amenities for Business Class is probably the best in the industry, it’s a shame they’ve cut back.
