I think all Hawaiian Miles members (regardless of status) only have to pay $15 for baggage on inter-island flights....since the OP was connecting to a mainline flight, maybe that's the reason for the $40. If you want your elite status to be recognized, the moral of the story is to book through the airline you are actually flying AND don't book mixed HA/AS itineraries....annoying but it's the reality we are in right now.
well, yikes, I’m really worried, I have a few flights booked with Alaska operated by Hawaiian in the next month and even though I have started with both Airlines Alaska doesn’t seem to be able to change my mileage number over to the Hawaiian number and I’m not sure Hawaiian can do it either, or maybe not until I get to the airport at least, praying I don’t have a situation where they try to charge me for baggage
