I think the problem is, you used Alaska award and tried to use Hawaiian status. My understanding is that Alaska/Hawaiian doesn’t allow for this yet until full frequent flyer program alignment is complete. (Similarly, you can also book award booking via DL/UA/AA which also connect with HA inter-island flight.. Hawaiian status do not apply to these either)
I think it’s just too early to assume all program benefit apply yet…

Yes, you're right that is the problem. But if the HA flight was codeshared or if used my Hawaiian ff# number then it would be no problemo. Hell, the baggage fee for Alaska flight is $35... Hawaiian wants more than that for a 30 minute flight? Do the poor saps without status really pay $40 + $35 for baggage fees? I think Alaska rushed to add Hawaiaan award fight options without figuring out the details.
AA has had HA awards forever and I've never heard of paying neighbor island baggage fees + the mainland AA fees! It's one ticket and they're double charging baggage fees.
