Thank you. Just finished talking to the agent. While they can't issue a new reference number, they are flagging the reservation so it can't be changed online.
If you have multiple people traveling, you might be able to get the PNR split as well, to avoid all flights getting cancelled.
But make sure the original has notes in it, in case someone does decide to cancel.
