But regardless coming from Europe you will definitely have to claim your bags at JFK and clear US customs. Assuming your connection is also from JFK then you just drop them back off with AA at JFK after you exit the customs area. Once you drop them back off at JFK you won't have to claim them again until you get to Australia.
