AA can and will make schedule changes. And as others noted, when a schedule change like this happens (going from a non-stop to a connection), you're entitled to some consideration - refund, rebook to a flight time that works better, etc.
The consideration is generally a full refund though to let you rebook on your own, unless you can prove you paid more for the nonstop at the time of booking (I'm not sure on data points for that though).
