I’m assuming the delay caused the crew timeout? But the diversion is also to address a technical issue. But whatever it is, it was OK to fly it to EWR and only requires about 40 minutes on the ground to fix the technical issue and swap crews since there isn’t an aircraft swap at EWR.
I think "technical issue" may be sort of a red herring, in that they code crew duty hour limits as a technical issue. I'm guessing that likely there isn't any remaining mechanical problem, or at least none causing the diversion directly. Perhaps someone else here can confirm.
I've only had one diversion due to crew timeout myself (resulting from heavily delayed inbound), but I think in that case they did put technical issue in the flight status, while on board nothing was ever mentioned about an issue with the plane itself.
