Right. The delays reason was the blurb quoted in my post about the planned diversion.

I’m assuming the delay caused the crew timeout? But the diversion is also to address a technical issue. But whatever it is, it was OK to fly it to EWR and only requires about 40 minutes on the ground to fix the technical issue and swap crews since there isn’t an aircraft swap at EWR.
