Finished 5 days in Hirafu/Niseko last week and while the ski'ing was great I'm thinking of a less commercialised (read: cheaper) place to go next. My 5-year old picked up pretty well but I'm at the limit of what I can teach him. He has some behavioural issues in group settings so group ski school didn't work out so well, thinking of getting a private instructor for him & my wife for a couple days but the ones at Niseko cost like 100k a day.
Gala Yuzawa has a ski school with foreign instructors that do private lessons and you can either stay in Yuzawa or commute from Tokyo on the shinkansen using the JR Tokyo Wide Pass. Not exactly a 'resort holiday' type of place though.
