Yeah, this is in place now- but apparently only for some airports; I was given a code (if you get the sheet of paper, ignore the QR code, the code underneath is the one you'll need) at SJC, but at SAN and SNA they had no idea what I was talking about.

I'd booked a bunch of trips before I'd found out about on-airport booking, but I'll try and do it the next time, and report back.
