400 cash for econ but you need to add the price of the front row seat, assuming you don't need baggage yourself as your +2 can check take the bags.so 450 cash minus some tiny avios earning Vs 8/20K avios + a some cash (50?)...so essentially buying avios (by canx the redemption) for 0.02 though you don't have to deal with the reimbursement. Both ok.
I get what you are saying- I would then have the 40k avios in a bank that I may or may not use (probably will eventually) plus be out the $400 + for the new fare - Honestly I would rather just keep the ticket as is and hope for some reimbursement after the fact. If I flew BA all the time (or this was a domestic US carrier that I know I would use, I would be tempted to cancel and rebook.
