Just to add to the mix - Jiufen is gorgeous and well worth a visit, but keep in mind that it can be INSANELY crowded with tourists. If you get there early in the morning, it should be more manageable, but once afternoon hits it can be just wall-to-wall people in the old street and environs. It actually felt far more crowded to me than even the busiest night market.
