I can't see why it's too remote, their first flight delayed and caused us missed our train. I'm disputing through AMEX now. what will be the best way to seek compensation for this?
The airlines are never responsible for any activities or bookings, which are not part of their ticket/package sale to you. This is like saying if the train was late, and you missed a concert, then the train company should pay you for the concert. Any loss you incurred, is a case for your travel insurance. If you used Amex, then depending on the type of card, you will have some level of travel insurance. File this with them and see if you can recoup some of the losses, and new costs, that way.
Compensation is a different question, which in your case should be covered under EC261. If you arrived more than 4hrs late to your ticketed destination, which you apparently did, then KLM could be on the hook for €600 per passenger in compensation. But this will only be due if the delay wasn't caused due to an extraordinary situation. Weather is an extraordinary situation, and AMS has had a spate of weather issues since the beginning of the year, so it could have been that. You should file an EC261 compensation claim with them, and they will tell you if it was a weather delay or not.
