I've had nothing but trouble with the license plate scanning/recognition.
Last time I forgot to print out the QR code and it was an 'experience' for both driving in and leaving. Needed to press the talk button both times, and they had some difficulties retrieving my booking. Fun!
Both actually since you asked!

First week from 21-28th I drove up and it scanned my tags and automatically opened for both in and out at the Term C garage. Never needed the QR code.

Second week 29th -5th at Term C I had to use my QR code. In hindsight I my plate was much too dirty from road salt and snow and such from the drive back the day before. I have Texas tags with a military medal on one side so I often find plate readers take extra time anyway such as at PHL each week. It actually picked up my EZpass tag first but after scanning the QR code that registered and I got in and out with no issues.
