The two problems with "Star Alliance Upgrade Awards" (SAUA) have mostly been covered already:
1. They require very high Fare classes (Y,B,M usually for Economy to Biz) ,
2. SQ doesn't routinely allow it to the products you'd actually want (Long haul)

Being more general, think of your UA miles as a specific currency... You can only spend that currency with UA.....so anything you do with them has to be through UA.
