Recently flew from Istanbul to Sydney on Turkish airline (with a stop in KL), details are as follows:
- Flight Details:
- Itinerary booked via Air Canada (using Aeroplan miles) under a single ticket from IST to MEL.
- Flights: Turkish Airlines TK174 (IST-SYD) on January 9, 2025, and connecting onto Virgin Australia (SYD-MEL) on January 10, 2025.
- Delay:
- TK174 was scheduled to arrive in Sydney at 18:30 when booked, later changed to 19:00 (by TK) but landed at 20:16. I had originally planned for a 3 hour transit period, which became 2.5 hours.
- Landed in Sydney with a delay of 1 hour and 16 minutes (from the updated time) and 1 hour and 46 minutes (from the original schedule). It probably took another 10-15 mins to deplane.
- Missed Connection:
- Virgin Australia flight from Sydney to Melbourne departed at 21:30, but I missed it due to Turkish Airlines' delay. I got to the transfer desk at 21:05ish, by which time the bag drop off was closed and this was the last flight of the day, so no VA staff to talk to.
- Australia Requires to clear customs, collect baggage, and recheck for the domestic flight per Australian regulations.
- Turkish Airlines staff in Istanbul misinformed me that baggage would be checked through to Melbourne, however I found out before landing that I needed to pick bags up and transfer it.
- <snip>
When was the change 18:30 to 19:00 made? On the day or before?
What was the reason for the delay? Did TK leave IST & KUL about on time.
Is "landed at
20:16" wheels down or at the gate with door open?
Were you talking to VA at T1 transfer desk or over in T2 domestic. Did VA cancel the VA SYD MEL flight or did you just
no show. If cancelled or changed would have been better.
20:16 to 21:30 T1 to T2 is very tight.
You may have a EU261 claim on TK. Or may not. Duty of care should apply (Nothing to do wth VA or AC)
QF or JQ may have had a later flight. I have flown SYD MEL QF497 22:20 23:50 several times, after international flights
TK now fly IST-xxx-MEL. Are always good reasons to avoid SYD and that T1<-->T2~T3 shuffule
