There has never been a point to online/app check-in. It's utterly useless. I'm so happy to see all the hotels have dumped that BS electronic sign showing "Marriott Online Checkin". Total waste of tablets & electricity.

Don't use it. Don't get frustrated by it. Just stand in line when you get to the hotel like everybody else because that's what you're going to have to do anyway.
