​​​​​​You'll need to collect your checked bags at London for a couple of reasons:
  1. BA doesn't thru-check on separate reservations (I assume this is what you mean by single ticket to Lisbon).
  2. Even if they did, your Lisbon flight isn't until the next day. BA doesn't generally thru check when the connection is the following day.

If you didn't fancy the idea of navigating your checked bag to your hotel and back again, assuming you're arriving Terminal 5 (you don't mention which US flight you're arriving in on), you could always leave your checked bag in left luggage before collecting it the following day ahead of your check-in.
