Requiring registration prior to a stay is Marriott's way of fostering engagement and getting people to read their "junk mail".

Letting people get credit for any stay within the promo period would merely mean checking every two or three months, and "back registering".
That would be extraordinarily generous!
The only thing "better" would be no registration requirement at all, like the UA Starter PQPs.
But here we are talking about redeemable points, and sometimes EQNs. Why not save them for guests who are actually interested?

The 'shady' part is NOT notifying me that there is a promo, me having to find about it via FT or some other means, and then having to call in to register for said "Global" promotion because I can't do it online despite being a very active LTT.
It's a great way to induce breakage thus appearing to run a 'promo' without actually having to make good and incur the costs of the 'promo'.
