From the city center of either city, you are going to have to take a Loca or car (or tuk tuk) to either the train station or the airport. Note that many hotels in Luang Prabang provide complimentary pickups/dropoffs to either the airport or the train station. While the train stations are farther than the airport, what do you mean by "less easily reached"?
