If its the same ticket, and they are selling it as the same ticket, then its legal and their problem. And it being their problem means they might help or make you whole.

But it doesn't pass my sniff test as being worth an individuals risk if its different tickets.

UK trains are nice, and might be worth the experience, and depending on where the airport/train/actual-destination is, faster, anyway.
