i'd like to gamble on a basic economy upgrade DFW-ICN mid-week, although not getting it for a 15h flight would be more misery than i'd prefer. is mileage credit for J is not given to these but typically is for prior points + miles upgrades, think i'll see if i can find a seat i could upgrade immediately with that C space, which i'll proxy with a saver award search flight for dates.
It's really not much of a gamble, as soon as you purchase practically any ticket with AA you can pull up your reservation online or in the app and you'll have an upgrade offer. Now whether the offer is good or crazy high is another story, these offers are dynamic, they can and will change from day to day.
And if you are crediting to AS then it's really a question of how AS treats AA paid upgrades in terms of credit, you might search over on the AS forum, I'm guessing it has been discussed before.
Finally on a route like DFW-ICN I'd say it's highly unlikely that you will find any C/upgrade space in advance. Unless you just get really really lucky AA typically won't release it until 24-48 hrs before the flight.
