Why either? Appears, the responsible party, Expedia failed to notify you of a change. That is the way it works when using a TA.
Additionally, it appears Expedia may have purchased you two separate tickets, which carries a risk they did not explain to you (or did they? Other services do provide such notification).
There are a number of complexities to this purchase that need to be fully understood before going to court.
